What about appliances not qualified by ENERGY STAR^®? Even though only a few appliances can qualify as ENERGY STAR, consider energy efficiency when purchasing any appliance.  

Ovens/Ranges
If you are considering buying a new range and oven, you can expect to live with your purchase for the next 20 years. The choice you make in the store can save you a little or a lot of money over the next two decades.

A gas stove costs less than half as much to operate as an electric one, provided it is equipped with electronic ignition instead of a pilot light. The electronic pilotless ignitions reduce gas usage by about 30 percent over a constantly burning pilot light. These are also more convenient, eliminating the need to restart a standing pilot light.

Microwave ovens
Microwave ovens without any frills are efficient compared to regular ovens. Using a microwave will reduce your energy consumption by about two-thirds compared to using a regular oven. Microwaves also create less heat so require less air conditioning in the summer.

The most energy-efficient microwaves have frills like temperature probes, variable power settings, and controls that turn the microwave off when the food is cooked.  

How do appliances get qualified?
